At Hout Bay Reformed Church, we hold to the historic Christian faith as faithfully revealed in Scripture. We recognise the Bible (Old and New Testaments) as the inspired, infallible, and final authority for faith, doctrine, and life.
We are Reformed Presbyterian: that is, we stand within the tradition of the Protestant Reformation, confessing the ecumenical creeds of the ancient church (the Apostles’ Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Athanasian Creed) as well as the historic Reformed confessions (e.g. the Westminster Confession) – summaries that faithfully reflect the teaching of Scripture.
We believe in one sovereign, holy, loving God, eternally existing in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (the Trinity). Each Person is fully God, co-equal and co-eternal, working harmoniously in creation, redemption, and sanctification.
The Scriptures are God’s written revelation to humanity. They are inspired by the Holy Spirit - true, trustworthy, and wholly sufficient for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness.
All people are made in God’s image but, through the fall, are guilty before God, spiritually dead, and inc
We believe Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, fully God and fully man. By His perfect life, substitutionary death, and triumphant resurrection, He secured salvation for all who trust in Him alone.
Salvation is God’s free gift: by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone - not by human merit or works. It is a work of God’s sovereign grace, secured by Christ’s atoning sacrifice, received through personal trust in Him.
Upon trusting Christ, the Holy Spirit regenerates believers, granting new life. The Spirit indwells, guides, convicts, sanctifies, and empowers believers for godly living.
We believe in the universal Church: all who are united to Christ by faith. We also believe in local churches - visible communities where God’s people gather for worship, teaching, sacrament, fellowship, and mission. Christ is the Head of the Church.
The Lord Jesus Christ instituted two ordinances for the Church: Baptism, signifying union with Christ in His death and resurrection. The Lord’s Supper, proclaiming Christ’s death until He returns. These are means of grace, signs and seals of God’s covenant, and central to the life of the congregation.
True faith produces a life of repentance, obedience, holiness, love, and good works. Believers are called to grow in Christ-likeness, empowered by the Spirit.
We affirm a bodily, visible return of the Lord Jesus Christ at the end of the age - resurrection of the dead, final judgment, eternal life for the redeemed, eternal punishment for the unrepentant. Christ will establish His eternal kingdom.
We affirm the historic Reformed doctrine of God’s sovereignty, covenant, and grace.
We submit to the Bible alone (Sola Scriptura) as the final authority for faith and life.
We submit our beliefs to the standard of historic creeds and confessions, not as replacements for Scripture, but as faithful summaries of Scriptural truth.
We uphold the unity of the universal Church and value fellowship and accountability in the local congregation.
We seek to worship God reverently, preach Christ faithfully, and live out our faith in humility, love, and service to others.
We believe that truth matters. In a world of shifting beliefs, we hold fast to what the church has believed, confessed, and proclaimed for centuries. We confess these truths not as a list of rules, but as the life-giving, soul-shaping realities of the gospel – entrusted to us to believe, proclaim, and live.
For those who wish to examine our doctrinal commitments in greater depth, we make available the full texts of the confessions and catechisms we subscribe to – including the Heidelberg Catechism and Belgic Confession.
You are also welcome to discuss any aspect of our faith with our elders or pastors. We strive to live transparently, faithfully, and in humble submission to God’s Word.
